Fuel poverty is now commonplace

Ann Robinson of uSwitch.com said that pensioners, single income families and families in receipt of benefits “face a real threat to their standard of living as fuel poverty becomes part of everyday British life”.
There were around 3.5 million households in fuel poverty in 2006, which is one million more than in 2005. The environment secretary, Hilary Benn, said that the number of calls to the ‘Act on CO2 helpline’, which advises people about energy efficiency, had increased threefold to over 57,000 in the fortnight following the campaign launch.
